Why Celebs Like to Be Seen in a Black Leather Bomber Jacket
When icons support certain fashions, the fashion itself becomes iconic. This is particularly true of the black leather bomber jacket which has been worn by superstars for decades. So, quite simply, they copy the fashion and also wear black jackets designed in this iconic style.
The origin of this type of leather jacket can be traced to the great, tragic world wars, when bomber pilots were issued with warm jackets to ensure their survival while flying high up in the atmosphere on a mission to kill. When movies were made about wartime activities and adventures, the heroes almost always wore these jackets. These guys were, of course heroes, and so they quickly became role models for heroes in other scenarios.
Some of the early stars to have worn leather jackets in movies include James Stewart who wore an authentic shearskin leather bomber jacket (not black) in the Western Night Passage. Gary Cooper also wore a shearskin design in the Oscar nominated and box-office hit For Whom the Bell Tolls which was produced in 1943. Harrison Ford embraced the color (black that is) when he starred in Indiana Jones in the 1980s. This was an authentic bomber jacket, and not a shearskin design like the others. In later adventure movies, also cobbled around Indiana Jones, the leather jackets were mostly brown.
Not quite the same, but very similar to bomber jackets, black leather motorcycle jackets have also become hugely popular. Ironically though, they have sometimes tended to get negative feedback because of how bikers are perceived to behave. These jackets are also more functional than those generally preferred by the celebrities who are frequently seen swanning around in their fashion designs that have been based on authentic designs, but cost $1000s of dollars more.
While traditional leather bomber jackets were brown, in the mid-20th century black became a much more popular color. Nowadays both black and brown are esteemed by celebs who are spotted wearing all kinds of leather jackets.
While the original jackets handed out to bomber pilots were really just practical safety clothing items, black leather bomber jackets have become high fashion. So when you consider why so many celebs like being seen in them, look at the designs that they choose and recognize the fact that they are sporting high class fashion.
